Essence
Sole access to a scarce asset: talent, manufacturing capacity, rights, compute. Helmer calls it a cornered resource. Among the thirteen sampled tags it is only partly covered — content rights and proprietary data are there, while talent, capacity and compute are not covered at all.
How it is built
ASML, and the queue at TSMC — a monopoly on the means of production
ASML is the only maker of EUV lithography machines in the world: without them nobody produces leading-edge chips, and no amount of money buys a second ASML quickly. A floor above, Apple has spent years prepaying for and buying out the entire capacity of TSMC's newest processes first: competitors physically get access to the best silicon a generation later.
Concentration of talent — DeepMind, OpenAI, Pixar
When the world-class specialists in a field number in the hundreds, assembling critical mass means depriving everyone else of it: DeepMind and OpenAI concentrated the top of ML research for years, Pixar did the same with directors and animation technologists. The moat is not the headcount but the density — the best go where the best are, and that reinforces itself.
Compute and exclusive rights
The OpenAI–Microsoft deal, tens of billions of compute during the GPU shortage, cornered the resource without which the frontier is unreachable. Sports leagues sell exclusive broadcast rights — NFL Sunday Ticket is a corner in its purest form: the content exists in one place by contract.
How it is bypassed
Outbidding — a corner on people leaks
Talent is never bound forever: in 2025 Meta conspicuously pulled apart competitors' research teams with packages in the tens of millions while assembling its own superintelligence lab. A corner on people is the most expensive to hold — it requires permanent overpayment, and an attacker with money always has a way in.
Substitute the resource — DeepSeek, and Huawei under sanctions
When the resource is unavailable, the scarcity is converted into an engineering constraint: Huawei under sanctions built its own chip chain, and DeepSeek trained a frontier-class model on curtailed compute through training efficiency. A corner holds while the resource is irreplaceable; pressure produces workaround technologies that lower the need for the resource itself.
A second source, and the buyer integrating backwards
The industry's standard countermeasure is to qualify a second supplier — Apple has spent its whole history cultivating alternatives to every monopoly vendor — or to build your own: Google makes TPUs and Amazon makes Trainium to get out from under Nvidia's corner. A corner survives long only where a second source physically fails to appear, and ASML remains the one true example.
Verdict
A cornered resource is a moat of contracts and scarcity: overwhelming while the resource is irreplaceable, and expensive to hold when the resource is people. It is bypassed by outbidding, by engineering substitution, and by a second source.
