## How it is built

### Whoop and Oura — a subscription to your own sensor's data

The strap or the ring collects metrics — heart-rate variability, sleep stages — at a quality a phone cannot reach, and the business model is a subscription to the analysis of that data. The moat is triple: sensor R&D, manufacturing, and the fact that the data exists nowhere but with the vendor. A software competitor cannot attach itself to the user's body.

### Peloton — hardware as an anchor for content and community

A $1,500 bike is a sunk investment by the user, and a class subscription and a community are strapped to it. Hardware here is less a sensor than a physical switching cost and a distribution channel for content.

### Timeular — a physical artefact as the interface

An eight-sided die on the desk that you flip to track time: the form factor is the product. A small company can build a hardware moat without a factory — through a distinctive physical interface that is awkward to copy and that differentiates it from purely software competitors.

## How it is bypassed

### The phone as a good-enough sensor

The smartphone killed pedometers, voice recorders and compact cameras: the sensors are good enough and the device is already in the pocket. Today a phone camera counts exercise repetitions and reads a pulse from a face — software using the hardware that is already there eats the bottom of the specialised-device market.

### Data aggregators — Apple Health and Health Connect

The platforms standardised access to data from any wearable: MacroFactor and Cronometer run businesses analysing that data without manufacturing a single sensor. The manufacturer's hardware moat ends at the write into HealthKit; past that point the contest is algorithms and UX. Tellingly, nearly the whole hardware tag in the sample is apps of exactly this kind.

### Commodity hardware — Xiaomi against Fitbit

Once a sensor stops being unique, Shenzhen ships an equivalent at a tenth of the price: the $30 Mi Band collapsed the margin on trackers. An attacker can simply strap their software to cheap white-label hardware — the moat holds only while the sensor is genuinely exclusive, which is why Whoop and Oura keep running towards metrics commodity bands do not have.

## Verdict

A hardware moat holds while the sensor is unique and the data is not standardised. The bypasses: the phone as the sensor, platform data aggregators, and commodity manufacturing.
